Basement Fire Strikes VFW Post 7720

Looking Ahead: A New Veterans Community Home on Smith Loop

A Temporary Home with a Lasting Mission

On June 16, 2020, a fire broke out at VFW Post 7720 in Cornelia, Georgia. The blaze began in the basement due to an electrical malfunction near an HVAC unit and quickly filled the building with smoke. Fire crews from multiple agencies responded swiftly and were able to contain the flames before they spread further. While the structure was saved, the building sustained heavy smoke damage throughout.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, the fire displaced the Post’s longtime caretaker, Billy Rice, a disabled veteran who had lived in a downstairs apartment for over a decade. The Post immediately stepped in to provide him with temporary housing and support.

A Temporary Home with a Lasting Mission

Following the fire at our longtime facility, VFW Post 7720 found a temporary home at 174 Cornelia Crossing Shopping Center. Thanks to the support of the community and our members, we’ve been able to rent and operate from this location while continuing our mission to serve local veterans.

Though this space has allowed us to keep vital programs and meetings going, it’s a temporary solution. Our ultimate goal is to build a new, permanent facility that will once again serve as a central hub for veterans across the region—a place of camaraderie, support, and service. Plans are already underway, and with continued community backing, we’re confident that dream will become a reality.

Every step forward brings us closer to a home built by and for those who served.

Looking Ahead: A New Veterans Community Home on Smith Loop

VFW Post 7720 is proud to announce plans for a new permanent home—a Veterans Community Home to be built on over 70 acres of land at 1492 Smith Loop Road in Demorest. This new facility will be more than just a meeting place; it will serve as a gathering space, support center, and resource hub for veterans and their families throughout northeast Georgia.

To bring this vision to life, we are actively seeking donations, sponsorships, and community partnerships. Every contribution—large or small—brings us one step closer to creating a lasting space that honors our mission and the sacrifices of those we serve.

This future home will carry forward the legacy of our namesakes, Joseph Grant and William Reeves, local heroes who gave their lives in World War II. With your help, we will build a facility that reflects their courage and continues to serve generations of veterans to come.
